Thyroid Cancer
Medullary thyroid cancer (MTC) is a form of thyroid carcinoma which originates from the parafollicular cells (C cells), which produce the hormone calcitonin. Medullary tumors are rare accounting for only 1.67% of all thyroids cancers, but responsible for 8% of all thyroid cancer deaths. UCSF is in the forefront of research seeking to develop novel drugs for advanced MTC disease, treatments that will be durable and potentially curative.
