The Section of Gastrointestinal (GI) Surgery takes care of patients with diseases of the gastrointestinal tract. This includes cancers and benign conditions of the esophagus, liver, spleen, bile ducts, pancreas, stomach and gallbladder. UCSF is a high volume center for GI surgery with excellent operative outcomes. Most surgeries are performed laparoscopically using minimally invasive techniques that. UCSF helped pioneer and continues to innovate in. Individualized care is a hallmark of the program. Patients receive state-of-the-art multidisciplinary care from a team that includes a gastrointestinal surgeon working in collaboration with other specialists such as gastroenterologists and thoracic surgeons.
